We’ve all heard about thousand times the phrase “don’t keep all your eggs in one basket” and in this case it fits accordingly. If you’re traffic is coming solely from Google then chances are you won’t survive, no matter whether you do blackhat or whitehat.

Early this year Google launched what it is notoriously known as Panda, an algorithm change which affected thousands of webmasters worldwide and affected many businesses as well. So what exactly was/is Panda about? Google wanted to wipe out all the MFA’s (made for adsense sites, or simple sites made for the sole purpose of earning money through ads / affiliate programs) which would allow authority sites with better content and better structure to rank higher. This is a screenshot I took from one of my sites and it clearly shows how bad the situation is:

The site above was ranking #2 for a very competitive keyword and once it was averaging 800-1000 unique visitors per day but after the panda update the site was lost in the serps. Note that the site contained unique content, was nicely done and didn’t even have any affiliate links in it (besides Google Adsense which sounds ironic banning a site which is using your service as the only way of income)

Solution

There’s no actual solution on how to protect yourself from the bizarre changes of Google. The only suggestion I would give is to DIVERSIFY your traffic sources. Social Media can be really lucrative if used properly, then you can also do some banner exchanges with similar sites and if you really want to push it, offline marketing would be ideal (however this one depends based on your niche)

Conclusion

The conclusion is quite simple, if you have 80 % traffic from Google then you better move before its too late. PPC / Media buying will not only increase your traffic but will also help you win loyal readers for your site

If you are in the search engine optimization game, chances are your site has been hit at least once by the so called “Google -50 Penalty”. You are ranking for a good term and your Adsense earnings are going great but all of a sudden, when you wake up one day you see that you made zero, nada, zilch from your biggest money making site. That very same thing happened exactly to one of my sites, that’s why I would like to elaborate more on this topic.

As we all know, forget what self-guru’s say about SEO and its factors, everyone knows that the biggest ranking factor are the backlinks and there are no bad links actually, its simply how you build them.

Google Minus 50 Penalty

As you can refer from its  name, you will lose 45-50 positions in the search engines. So chances are that if you were ranking on #1, you will end up on page 4-5 now and the organic traffic will disappear right away.

How is it caused?

There must be a proportion ( I prefer to call it distribution) of anchor texts used in your backlinks. If you’re main keyword is “healthy diet” and all your backlinks have “healthy diet” as an anchor text, you will trigger the alarm over at Google which will punish you with the -50 penalty

The Cure

Never use the same anchor text while building backlinks, it won’t look like natural hence you might get banned from the Big G. Use always variations of your keyword and whats most important, do not only link to your homepage, try to link to your other sub-pages or categories too. In this way there will be a distribution of links going to the main URL as well as to the other sub-pages of your website.

So if you’ve been hit by Google -50 penalty, its time to continue building backlinks with just a simple twist, link to your subpages as well as rotate the anchor texts used. By my personal experience you will be out of the penalty in 45-60 days

I often get asked on how important is a domain name and to be honest, with all my latest projects, I’ve chosen exact match domains and the results have been incredible. In this article I will outline some of the key factors on why should you use an exact domain name for your next affiliate site

What is an Exact Match Domain?

As it can clearly be understood from the name, an exact match domain is a domain which contains the exact primary keyword you are targeting in the domain name. For example if your niche is golf and you are targeting “golf courses” keyword then the exact match domain would be golfcourses.com / golfcourses.net / or any other combination

Awesome, so I’m going to register GolfCourse.im (Isle of Man) and dominate all the search engines hence becoming a millionaire overnight … erm thats not right, the first reason being that the extension (.im) is a cctld (country code top level domain) which cannot be compared with the potential of the top level domain names

What domain name extension to use?

Search Engines are changing their algorithms quite often hence you have to keep up with the latest updates and find out yourself whats working best for you however, right now, the most successful domain name extensions I’ve reached top rankings in Google are in the following order

1. .COM
2. .ORG
3. .NET

Wait a minute, there’s no .info right? You are right, to be honest I haven’t been able to get too much Google love for my .INFO domain names and that is commonly connected with the fact that lately, since .INFO’s are so damn cheap they’ve been used mostly in spamming / scrapping sites with no actual value or whatsoever

No more exact match domains left?

While it is true that the best exact match domains (.com / .net / .org) have already been grabbed, you can always use hyphens (golf-courses) and if thats gone already,  I would recommend you to do another research and make sure not to broaden your search, focus on one particular niche and get hundreds of keywords, analyze them and decide which one is the proper one

Proof or it didn’t happen!

Usually I never disclose my niches for obvious reasons, let me tell you that exactly yesterday I launched a new site (my good old pal Tycho can verify it) and in no more than 24 hours my site is ranked on second page of Google for a keyword with a volume search of 25,000 exact match searches per month and a competition of 6 million sites! Impressive eh? Well, not for me, because that’s what you get when you combine an exact domain name with the super charged WordPress platform

Conclusion

Exact Domains are the biggest trend right now, if you haven’t already noticed then you’ve been missing a good opportunity to rank higher and higher. Note that all of my sites (as this one) use WordPress platform with some incredible seo plugins, it just makes a lot easier to control / maintain everything

If I had to choose a title for myself, I would definitely be a search engine optimizer. I started out 4 years ago and everyday search engine optimization amazes me more and more. However there are different cases I would like to speak about SEO as in general and SEO as a rapidly increasing industry

On various forums I see threads by self-claimed seo gurus which charge like, $99 and would get you ranked on top of Google / Yahoo / Bing or any other search engines within 3 months. Now if this was true, I see a big contradiction in here, because why should they be working for other people when they can open sites for themselves, work fully and flip the sites at the end of each 3 months (I’m sure the profit margin will be much higher)
